KUALA LUMPUR: The Council of Malaysian Women Political Leaders (Comwel) today proposed for political parties in the country to introduce gender quotas for the selection of electoral candidates. Its founder and president, Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, said this would work well to enhance women's participation in national politics.

Umno's decision to increase its candidates from the fairer sex in the next general election has been described as one will provide better opportunities and recognition for Malaysian women. In welcoming the move, Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) said Umno's move in the 15th General Election bodes well for better representation of the fairer sex in more of the country's sectors. The party's deputy president Haniza Talha said PBM was a strong advocate for greater women participation and the decision by Umno to nominate 30 per cent women candidates in the next general election will greatly help in winning over support from women.

Men and women approach politics quite differently. Studies have shown that testosterone-driven leadership tends to be more aggressive and exclusionary. On the other hand, the fairer sex is known to be more emphatic and consultative, without necessarily being weak or ineffective. In fact, in many instances women have displayed leadership attributes and effectiveness that surpass that of men.

Sustainability has always been associated with deforestation. However, it is crucial to note that sustainability is more than just forests. The United Nations’ definition of sustainability is clear: social and economic sustainability is on an equal plane with environmental. So, the Malaysian Government is also focused on supporting small farmers and their economic communities. Among the initiatives includes developing infrastructure, granting financial assistance where needed, and protecting the ability of small farmers to earn a living.

“Looking at sustainability and circular economy, we realise that we have to work with many stakeholders and potential tech players to harness the latest technology to further explore the full potential of agri-commodity production. “There is a need for better facilities, more advanced technologies and substantial investments into the industry to ensure a competitive edge against traditional practices,” she said in a her speech at the Malaysian-British Partnership Forum at the Caledonian Club, London recently.

EU vegetable oil group FEDIOL on Tuesday said Indonesia's ban is not a concern as it has palm oil reserves for several weeks. Uncertainty over sunflower oil supplies due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine has spurred demand for rivals palm and soy oil as importers seek alternatives, fuelling a red-hot vegetable oil market.

Its president, Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin said the Youth and Sports Ministry and related agencies must look into the plight of all athletes, regardless of their gender and race.She said Fowcus was upset that the achievements by Shereen Vallabouy recently were not highlighted and given the due recognition it deserved.
